Photographer Partho Bhowmick curates a unique photography project by the visually challenged that’s headed for IIM-A.

Back in 2006, when photographer Partho Bhowmick decided to start a unique project on photography, he was met with acute scepticism. After all, he was telling the world even the blind could click amazing photographs.

Five years down the line, 42-year-old IT professional and black and white photography expert, Partho is not only curating his travelling exhibition of photographs clicked by visually challenged photographers but has been presenting his project at different summits and forums across the country including IIT Mumbai.

After his current annual exhibition kick-started in the city, Partho has been invited by IIM Ahmedabad to take his project to the campus. And naturally, he is elated. He says, “People have never seen anything like this before. They come into the gallery with zero expectations and go away exhilarated.”

Partho tells After Hrs about his inspiration. “I started this project in 2006 after I came to know Evgen Bavcar, a blind photographer in Paris. We made contact and exchanged a lot of information. After that, I got involved in in-depth research on blindness and visual art form.” His efforts culminated in his first exhibition at the NCPA with which the number of contributing visually challenged photographers grew from one to fifteen.

The photographs taken by the visually challenged people, some suffering from partial and the rest from total blindness, vary in subjects. For example, Partho points out that the photographers who are completely blind depend on their sense of touch and sound to choose their subject. He adds, “There are many who lost sight gradually. They then depend on their memory to choose.”

Curating a unique show like this has brought immense changes in his personality, points out Partho. He says, “When I started this project, I flushed out my attitude of being sighted.” The exhibition is on display at the Alliance Francaise till January 29.
