These women certainly make for astute entrepreneurs. But what’s really interesting is that all of them have joined together for a common cause — that of empowering other women. Indeed, as a registered trust that has been set up only earlier this year (by the likes of Minakshi Bajaj, Parul Choksey, Mala Goenka, Brinda Khatau, Gauri Pohoomul and Madhu Ruia amongst others), Sahachari has made some great progress over the last few months.

Bijal Meswani, who’s on the trust’s committee, points out that the main aim is to promote India’s culture and tradition. “That even explains why we have got a gamut of talented women designers, both established and newcomers, to showcase their designs on one platform called Design One. We are also supporting the NGO Apne Aap, which works for the education and shelter of the children of prostitutes,” she says.

Varsha Patel, wife of Union Minister Praful Patel and a successful designer herself, says she couldn’t say no to such a great charitable cause. “I have been mainly showing at solo exhibitions until now but when I got to know of Sahachari and the cause they are supporting, I was more than happy to participate. So I am showing my line of bags and sarees — all of which are made from the tusser yarn (also called kosa). In fact, this yarn is specially handmade by the women from Bhandara Gondia district, which is also my husband’s constituency,” she enthuses, not forgetting to mention that her daughter Poorna constantly provides her with valuable inputs for the collections.

Gauri Pohoomul, who’s one of the founder members of the trust, elaborates further, “Earlier this year, we had organised Charisnu, a dance show, and then we had our Janmashtami function which had a renowned vocalist perform. And as far as Design One is concerned, the idea is to raise awareness for NGOs and raise funds for them. So a considerable portion of the proceeds will go to Apne Aap.”

“Slated to take place on September 1 and 2 at the World Trade Centre Arcade, Design One is one of many initiatives that we have lined up. It’s just the beginning of a long journey and as the name Sahachari suggests, it’s about women walking together,” ends Bijal.
