An interesting fusion session with the participation of vocalist Rahul Deshpande, saxophonist George Brooks, flautist Shashank Subramanyam and tabla player Vijay Ghate will the attraction of the music festival Vasantotsav this year. The fest is scheduled from January 20 to 22.
The music festival is being organised by Dr Vasantrao Deshpande Pratishthan since last five years in the memory of renowned vocalist late Vasantrao Deshpande. The sessions will be held from 5.30 pm to 10 pm at Ramanbaug Ground.
The first day of the event would begin with the performance of vocalists Roop Kumar Rathod and Sonali Rathod. It will be followed by a jugalbandi between vocalist Ustad Rashid from the Rampur Sahaswan Gharana and one of the finest sitar players, Ustad Shahid Parvez from Etawah Gharana.
A performance by tabla maestro Swapan Chaudhuri will mark the beginning of the second day of the fest. It will be followed by a fusion session between Deshpande, Brooks, Subramanyam and Ghate.
George Brooks is often considered as the leading American voice in Indian jazz fusion. He is a saxophonist and composer.
The third and final day would have performances of Niladri Kumar and Pt Rajan and Pt Sajan Mishra. Niladri is son and disciple of sitar maestro Pt Kartick Kumar. Mishra brothers are known for the khyal style of Indian classical music.
Grandson of Vasantrao Deshpande, Rahul Deshpande said, “This year, too, we will continue with the tradition of presenting different genres of music. It is about bringing different form of music on one stage since my grandfather always admired listening to all types of music.’’
