For actor Chandan Roy Sanyal, Prague has been “one of the best destinations” that he’s been to in the last five years of his life. The penetrating architecture of the place, he feels, makes it stand apart from the rest of Europe.

“The minarets are conical and pointed. Since I was shooting for a film where I play an architect and an insomniac, the city gav e me all the reasons to stay up and function,” says Chandan, asserting that the city doesn’t let one sleep. “I was blown away by the the open bars, music festivals, studios, bars and pubs. And of course, the women, fashion and food! The ruins of world war juxtaposed with the new is very unique. It has the best collection of beers from all over the world and comes cheaper than our Indian currency,” Chandan reveals.

The city is divided into different pin codes. “Praha as it is called in Czech is divided into around seven districts. Praha 1, where I stayed, is the town and the heart of the city right next to the Prague castle. The Charles Bridge connects the old city with the new and there are hardly any new modern buildings,” he recalls .

The actor even travelled outside to places like Kotna Hura where he shot in Bone Chapel — a place made of thousands of human bones, places like Caslav and Letty where I went to a graveyard of a mass burial. The Salvador Dali museum and the Prague film school and the main town square boasts of a laser and audio show about the history of Praha. Not so thrilled by the typically bland food, Chandan jokes that he survived on beers alone. “Though the cabbage and chicken chops were amazing, I mostly lived on beers as I love to taste all kinds of beers and absynthe bars,” he laughs.

The actor swears by the weather there. “The temperature was around 10 degrees with light showers sometimes, otherwise it was mostly sunny. The people were really great and had lots of questions about India. Most of them were Raj Kapoor fans,” he says. Convinced that Prague is the most romantic city on earth, Chandan promises to pay a second visit to the city. “Praha is divine!”
