When Vanessa Hudgens stepped out recently for the world premiere of her new film, Second Act, the actress turned heads in a coral ruffled Marc Jacobs creation paired with matching monochromatic make-up extending from her eyelids to her cheeks and pout. Her co-star Jennifer Lopez donned a bolder shade at another film press event completing her bodycon dress and trench coat look with a glossy coral lip. Pantone recently announced Living Coral as its 2019 Colour of the Year. The orangish-pinkish, typically summer hue, is flattering not just for garments but also as part of one’s vanity kit. It works beautifully to highlight the eyes, make the lips pop or even to create some warmth on the cheeks. Experts tell After Hrs why it’s a must-have in everyone’s beauty bag.

A MAKE-UP KIT STAPLE

It’s not just Hollywood beauties who have experimented with this striking colour. Alia Bhatt, too, is a fan, using it to freshen up her eyes or add some sparkle to her pout. Make-up expert Clint Fernandes admits coral lip colours and blushers are a staple in his kit. “It is most commonly used on the lips. A matte texture works best for dusky skin tones, whereas a glossy lip is recommended for those on the fairer side. Darker women can also try out a terracotta coral hue,” he says, adding that applying it on the eyes can be tricky. Avoid using a kohl pencil and instead blend the shade with a dark brown or black shadow for the lids. “Many B-Town stars have played with coral lips, be it Deepika Padukone, Kriti Sanon or Malaika Arora. When worn with the right outfit, it can look glamorous. But the trick is to get the right texture. Alia prefers the glossy coral look that works quite well for the red carpet,” he avers.

CAMERA-FRIENDLY COLOUR

Most experts agree that the best way to work this hue is with a peachy-coral blush to add a glow to your face. Both Bella Hadid and Kate Bosworth have used this to add a pop of colour to their cheeks. Closer home, Yami Gautam favours a more pinkish tinge to offset her deep-toned outfits.

Make-up expert Vipul Bhagat says stick to a coral blush as the lip shade doesn’t work for everyone. “This is a season favourite, but I don’t see it lasting too long. A pout in this hue, when paired with softer eyes, balances it out nicely. Ensure that you get the right shade of coral, as otherwise, it can look funny. Clean eyes with just liner or mascara, a coral mouth, and a red dress are a winning combination. I love using it as it’s a very camera-friendly colour,” he adds.

IDEAL FOR INDIAN SKIN TONES

At the Emmy Awards, Tracee Ellis Ross stepped out with bold coral-orange lids paired with a fuchsia mouth. For her Christian wedding to Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra Jonas opted for a coral eyeshadow to accentuate her lids which she teamed with a pink-berry pout. Make-up expert Mallika Bhat says coral is Indian skin tone friendly. “It can be incorporated on the eyelids with a hint of gold or just by itself too. As a lipstick or gloss, it’s good too. Just make sure you don’t overdo it. A hint on the eyes and cheeks or lips and cheeks is enough. Experiment a little but also take a good look in the mirror before stepping out,” she advises.
