Nearly a year back, a youth from the city swept by the powerful force of water passing from the Kartarpura nallah area and a week later, his body was recovered kilometers away from the spot.

Early on Tuesday morning, a similar incident would have been repeated when a biker trying to cross the overflowing bridge got swept by the force of water, however, he luckily got stuck in the railing installed at the bridge. While the youth wailed for help, an MLA rushed to his aide and saved him using his Safa (headgear). Notably, the railings that saved the youth from drowning were installed just two days back.

At around 6.15 AM, a youth from Tonk Road area of the city – identified as one Kishori Meena – was travelling on his bike. “Due to heavy rains that lashed the city throughout the night, the water in the Kartarpura nallah had been flowing at a great force. Meena was on his bike and thought of crossing the nallah from near the Kartarpura railway underpass,” officials said.

However, little did the youth realise that he was playing with his life. “As the man drove his bike into the flowing water, he lost control due to the force of water the vehicle fell on one side with Kishori still on the seat. As soon as the man fell, the water dragged it further with its flow. However, he was lucky that his bike got stuck in the railing. Realising that he might fall in the water in the nallah and possibly drown, the man raised an alarm and shouted for help,” officials said.

His wails were heard by locals, one of whom was the security staff of Kathumar MLA Manglaram Koli. “The man was taking a bath when he heard the wails and immediately rushed out. The MLA also rushed out to help. They found him trapped and could have got swept anytime,” officials said.

Recovered Bike

With no rope around, the MLA used his safa and threw it around Kishori to give him something to hold onto while tying the bike to the nearby wall with the safa. The MLA and his guard then slowly pulled Kishori out of the flowing water while also subsequently recovering his bike, said the officials.
