Summer may be slowly heading towards its peak and this usually triggers a shortfall in drinking water. Not this year, at least. With assembly election just round the corner, the state government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that there is no disruption in the supply of water.

Principal secretary of PHED Rajat Mishra is himself going to the field and monitoring water supply projects. During a meeting recently, he ordered his officials to undertake field visits also. Mishra visited Phulera in Jaipur district and Sawai Madhopur in the last few days.

Usually, those at the level of chief engineers and superintendent engineers are responsible for monitoring at the district level and rural areas across the state. However, Mishra has also been inspecting various projects going on in these places.

Notably, problems related to drinking water availability can become an issue in the assembly elections.During the budget session of the assembly, a large number of questions related to water were taken up by various MLAs in the house by both the ruling party and the opposition. The department issued special guidelines to district officials ordering them to resolve the problems at the earliest and as per the order, no negligence related to providing drinking water to the people will be tolerated. The chief engineers and additional chief engineers of all the districts have been made in charge and they have been asked to visit the field and ensure that problems of consumers related to drinking water are taken care of.

Since a large portion of the population gets drinking water through hand pumps in the state, it’s often called the backbone of the villages. The department has started an intensive drive since April 1 to repair hand pumps and for these repairs, approval for the contractual labour has also been given.

Tankers are also making trips across 16 towns to provide drinking water.
