In yet another case of drunken driving, six youngsters met with a serious accident in which one of them died and five others suffered serious injuries. The incident took place at around 1.30am on Friday night when the six were returning from the Royalty Pub in Bandra and were near the SNDT College on Juhu Tara Road.

Vile Parle resident Shivani Rawat, 18, succumbed to her injuries around 6.30am, after she was transferred from Cooper to Nanavati Hospital. Twenty-year-old Priyanka Rai, 19-year-old Nimisha Mane and 23-year-old Krishna Thevar are still in the Intensive Care Unit and are said to be critical.

According to the police, six people in the car were drunk and it was Rahul Mishra who was driving a Hyundai Getz at a speed he couldn’t control. Rahul first crashed the car into a tree and then hit a divider, after which the vehicle hit a parked auto-rickshaw.

“Rahul was driving very fast. That’s why they couldn’t control the vehicle after hitting the tree,” said senior police inspector Madhukar Chaudhari at the Santacruz Police Station. The police have arrested the 30-year-old and will have him in police custody till April 4. Rahul has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Indian Motor Vehicles Act. His offences include culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and rash and negligent driving.
