A 25-year-old woman in Pune paid a heavy price on Thursday for presuming that a private car was a share-a-taxi.

She was gang-raped by the three occupants of the car near Hinjewadi.

The Hinjewadi police arrested two of the three suspects – Ranjit Shahaji Gade, 25, of Maan, Ganesh Uttam Kamble, 26, of Thergaon — on Friday morning. History-sheeter Subhash Hiralal Bhosale, 30, of Mann, is still missing. The two arrested have been remanded in police custody till April 6.

A post-graduate in hospitality management, the woman, whose husband is in the US, had come to Pune from Nagpur a fortnight ago to look for a job. Deputy commissioner of police Mahesh Patil told reporters that the victim was residing at Kaspate Vasti near Wakad with an aunt.

Patil said the woman had left her home on Friday afternoon around 4 pm to go to the Deccan Gymkhana area and on Kaspate Vasti Road she hailed a red Indica private car assuming it was a share-a-taxi.

Bhosale was at the wheel and Gade in the passenger seat. They drove to Nana Peth in the heart of Pune to repair the car. According to the police, Bhosale assured the woman that he would drop her to her destination soon after carrying out the repairs.

However, Bhosale drove towards Indira College at Wakad where Kamble was waiting for them. The trio then drove to Hinjewadi, purchased beer and biryani, before proceeding to Hinjewadi Phase-III, where they allegedly raped her.

They later dropped her near her home a few minutes past midnight.

When her relatives saw her condition they immediately lodged a police complaint. DCP Patil said the woman was taken to Yeshwantrao Chavan memorial hospital for treatment.

“After recording the woman's statement, we were able to trace Bhosale. When we reached his house in Mann, we managed to nab his two accomplices, but he managed to flee. We are searching for him and will nab him soon,” Patil said.
