Commemorating breast cancer awareness month, a walk was organised here today.

The walk was flagged off by Dr Kiran Bedi in which more than 1,500 enthusiasts walked approximately two kilometres spreading the message of fight against breast cancer.

"Regular exercise, avoiding alcohol and smoking can help to reduce the risk of breast cancer," said Dr Bedi, while explaining the essence of various measures to abstain from the dreadful disease.

"The number of people with such lifestyle ailments is alarmingly increasing at a fast pace and affecting the urban and semi-urban population with the same intensity," she said.

According to WHO, cancer is all set to outpace heart ailments as the biggest killer in next two years. It also says that cancer cases will soon touch 12 million mark this year.

By 2030, new cancer cases could rise to 27 million with up to 17 million deaths.

"Breast cancer is not a single disease. It is multiple diseases behaving differently in each individual," said Dr Mukta Baxi, senior consultant surgical oncology and breast surgery while explaining the symptoms of the disease.

"Most cases of breast cancer are curable if detected in its earlier stages," Baxi said.
