Former union minister Shankersinh Vaghela, who was detained along with Suresh Mehta and Madhusudan Mistry, hit out at the Narendra Modi government for attempting to sabotage the rally. Vaghela said Modi’s action demonstrates “there is no democracy in the state as people’s right to expression is being curtailed.”

“The police forces not allowed us even to garland the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar,” said Vaghela.

“Vaghela has been detained along with some of his colleagues. They are being taken to Gandhinagar,” JCP (Sector 1) Satish Sharma told DNA. Sharma said that they had detained around 250 people.

However, Congress leaders alleged that police had detained around 1,000 people. Meanwhile, the Gandhinagar police registered a complaint against Gujarat State Employees Coordination Committee (GSMCC) for organising the rally against state government.  The Sector 7 police registered the complaint against Vishnu Patel and Abdul Chauhan of  GSMCC and nine others.

In Surat, 17 employees of district panchayat were detained by police when they were coming to Ahmedabad to participate in the rally. District collector AJ Shah had issued a notice two days back asking employees to avoid participating in the rally.
A case was registered against all these employees for not following the orders of the administration.
