In a world full of changes, where technology is improving day by day, education also needs transformation.

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (DAOU) has taken a big step in this direction to introduce reforms in education, mainly through technological advancements. A national conference of vice-chancellors has been organised in this regard. It started on Wednesday with chief minister Narendra Modi gracing the event as the chief guest.

The main objective of the conference was to implement the choice based credit system for which vice-chancellors from five Universities of Gujarat signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DAOU for the implementation.

Vice-chancellors of Kutch University, Bhavnagar University, Hemchandra University, Ganpat University (Khedva) and Gujarat Forensic Science University (Gandhinagar) signed the MoU in the presence of the guests. The system will bring synergy between a conventional and an open university, where a student will be allowed to study elective subjects along with core ones.

Congratulating the vice-chancellors of the universities on the signing of the MoU, CM Narendra Modi said: "It seems our universities have become just organisations to distribute certificates. There is a need to prepare a student completely and in all areas where he cannot be questioned by anyone on his education. This conference seems to be a step in that direction."

A knowledge portal was also launched at the event where the students will be able to view all the course material at the click of a mouse, without any registration or password.

The portal is www.baou.edu.in. Further in the direction of advancement of educational technology, Gyanbindu (Mobipedia) was launched which is an encyclopedia of words which can be accessed through mobile. A letter of intent for the PC tablet was also signed at the conference where all information will be available in e-text form in a gadget which will be touch screen and have the capacity to store as well.

Along with the launches for transformation, the conference also felicitated Anand Patel, the boy from Gujarat who stood 32nd at the UPSC examination. Having secured the highest rank in the prestigious exams ever for Gujarat, he was given a gold medal by Modi.

"There is a need to change the mindset and operations for the better development of education. Improvement in technology with a better student-teacher relationship can help in imparting quality education," said Prof. VN Rajshekharan Pillai, V-C, IGNOU.
State education minister Raman Vora, who was also present at the event, said, “Such programmes will encourage more and more students to go for higher education, thereby giving us a better and well-educated community.”
