Cries and shrieks rent the air as the body of Dr Syed Arshid Abbas, who died in the air-ambulance crash in Faridabad, reached his village Nawlari in Pattan in north Kashmir.

Arshid, posted in the Apollo hospital in New Delhi, was one among those on board the air-ambulance which crashed into a Faridabad colony on Wednesday. As news of his death spread through the scenic Nawlari village, people left their daily chores midway and rushed to the home of Arshid to console the family which is held in high esteem in the area.

Arshid belonged to a family of doctors who have dedicated their lives to helping people in distress. His father Abdul Majeed and sister are noted doctors of the area. Locals said Arshid’s father has been helping people in tiring and difficult circumstances.

“Even in difficult circumstances the family were treating people. Many a time they would visit patients at home to treat them,” said Mohammad Yusuf Bhat, a villager.

Since morning on Thursday villagers have been camping at Dr Arshid’s house. “This is the season for cultivation and everyone is usually busy in the fields this time of the year. But as soon as we heard the tragic news, all of us left work and rushed to the doctor’s house. Hussain’s death is nothing less than a catastrophe for this village,” said Ghulam Hassan, a neighbour.

Arshid had been posted in Apollo for the last few years. Before that he was studying abroad. “He and his father were treating patients free of cost. They were of great help to us. We can’t fathom that doctor sahib is dead,” said Hassan.

J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah expressed sorrow over the doctor’s death. “That  is very sad. May God rest his soul in peace. The co-pilot of the plane was my co-pilot’s batch mate and friend as well”, Omar tweeted.
