It won’t be easy for CPI and CPI(M) workers planning to shift loyalty for fear of a loss in next year’s assembly election in West Bengal. For, Trinamool Congress, where most comrades are headed, has made new entries difficult.

Trinamool will put CPI and CPI(M) workers seeking membership through a rigorous test. The test will be tough for CPI(M) workers, while members of CPI will have it rather easy. For workers of other Left Front members — All India Forward Bloc and Revolutionary Socialist Party(RSP) — it will be a cakewalk.

Trinamool Congress has come up with a gradation system for new entrants. Under the system, aspirants have been slotted in four categories.

RSP and Forward Bloc members have been categorised as “satisfactory”, CPI as “average” and CPI(M) as “doubtful,” or “highly doubtful”.

Ordinary members of CPI(M) student, youth and trade wings have been placed in the “doubtful” category, while local committee members of the party are in the “highly doubtful” category.

According to sources, those who have been graded “satisfactory” will get instant Trinamool membership. They only have to fill up a form and pay the membership fee.

Those who have been graded “average” might be allowed entry only if they give acceptable reasons for the shift. However, thorough investigation of credentials will be conducted in case of candidates in the “doubtful” and “highly doubtful” categories.

Trinamool will give instant membership to those who have been expelled from CPI(M), as the party believes that CPI(M) expels only honest members who protest its misdeeds.

As per Trinamool sources, the reason for this gradation is that Forward Bloc and RSP leaders are vocal against CPI(M) on many issues such as farmland acquisition and hence their erstwhile members will be at the “satisfactory” level.

CPI, on the other hand, neither lauds CPI(M) on land acquisition nor publicly criticises it and hence its members belong to a grade lower than their counterparts in Forward Bloc and RSP.

“CPI(M) being the mastermind of all such evils in the state, its members automatically fall in the lowest grade,” Trinamool sources said.
