A 60-year-old Dalit woman died in Bulandshahar on Sunday after she could not reach the hospital on time apparently due to the heavy barricading on the roads in view of Uttar pradesh chief minister Mayawati's visit.

The woman Geeta Devi, suffering from acute headache, died after the private car in which she was being taken to the hospital here was stopped by police personnel near Salempur police station on Bulandshahr-Badayun highway to facilitate the passage of the chief minister's convoy.

The desperate relatives of the woman, who belonged to Morni village, tried to take another route to the hospital but security personnel on duty did not allow them to do so, resulting in her death.

"Due to heavy barricading and security presence on the roads in view of the chief minister's visit we could not make it to the hospital on time, resulting in my wife's death," Premchand, the husband of the deceased woman told reporters.

There has been no word yet from police and district officials on the incident.

Mayawati visited the town today as part of her ongoing programme to review the progress of development projects in different parts of the state.
