Srinagar: In paradise love transcends all religions and castes. For 20-year-old Sikh girl Amitpal Kaur aka Aasiya, marrying Imran Dagga, a Muslim boy, was a risky affair in militancy torn Kashmir. But she braved it all to be with her Prince Charming. Aasiya, who has converted to Islam, had to spend 18 days in police station but didn't give up.
In Bollywood style, this love story had a happy ending when the courts came to Aasiya's rescue and facilitated her reunion with her husband. In a landmark judgment, Jammu and Kashmir high court ordered her reunion with her husband with full police protection ignoring the pleas of her family members who had filed a case of abduction in the police station Parimpora against Imran.
"A direction shall be issued to the state respondents (IGP Kashmir, SSP Srinagar and SHO Parimpora) to ensure no one interferes in Aasiya's life. In her putting up with petitioner number one (Imran), SHO Parimpora is directedto take requisite measure in this respect and provide all requisite police protection to the petitioners keeping the SSP Srinagar informed about the action taken by him", said Justice JP Singh of the high court.
This love story has all the ingredients of romance, suspense and a thriller. She was a student in Class VIII when she met Imran and it was love at first sight. "I owned a bus thatferried the students to school. She was in the eighth standard then and I used to drive the vehicle sometimes. Since then there is no looking back", said Imran.
In September they quietly solemnised Nikah but she continued to live with her parents. "She was sent to Jallandhar for studies and when she came back during the Diwali holidays she decided not to go back. She told me that we should now make our marriage public which was disapproved of by her parents who lodged a case against me", said Imran.
To safeguard their relationship, they approached the high court seeking to quash the FIR. The girl was then sent to a women's police station, not as an accused but as a guest and was released after 18 days", saidtheir counsel SM Ahmad.
Celebrations continue at Imran's home but rumors that Aasiya's parents are appealing in the Supreme Court have come as a shock. " This has created some fear in our minds", said Aasiya.
