It seems that thieves and burglars in the city have set their sights high. For, the police have registered a number of thefts and burglaries specifically targeted at top-floor houses of high-rise apartments. Incidentally, most of these cases have been registered during the December- January 15 period in areas such as Vastrapur, Satellite and Ghatlodia.

Zone-I police, under whose jurisdiction these areas fall, are taking a look at this new trend. The ninth-floor house of a senior official of a nationalized bank in Regency Tower near Management Enclave, Vastrapur, was burgled recently. Similarly, a bullion trader Bhavesh Soni's eighth-floor flat in Vastrapur was broken-into and valuables stolen.

Apart from these, recent burglaries in top floor houses of Shreeji Tower, Indraprasth
Tower and Goyal Intercity among others were also registered in the last one month.

A common thing in all these burglaries is that all the houses were situated on the sixth or higher floors.

"We are aware of this trend and are looking into the matter. We have started several initiatives to curb such incidents. Concerned police stations have been asked to take several preventive measures including briefing the presidents of apartments and private security guards," said Rajiv Ranjan Bhagat, deputy commissioner of police, zone-one.

Police officials said it is almost impossible to keep a 24/7 watch on such buildings and so they are meeting with the association of residents to brief them
about the trend and the preventive measures that need to be taken.

The surveillance and detection staff of police stations has also been asked to take note of the trend. According to police officials, the modus operandi of thieves is quite simple.

The thieves first do a recee of the building
and gain information from maids, drivers or in some cases security guards about houses which are unoccupied. Once they obtain specific information the thieves strike at will, said the officials.
