India Friday issued a nationwide terror alert, particularly for metros such as Delhi and Mumbai, after security agencies found a car laden with five kg of explosives meant for the Indian capital at the railway station in Ambala, Haryana.

The alert has been issued by intelligence agencies following information that the explosive consignment was meant for the capital, ahead of Diwali festival later this month.

"The alert states that terrorists are planning to strike during Diwali," government sources said here.

Following the alert, police forces in New Dehi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, apart from major cities such as Bangalore and Hyderabad, have ramped up security, sources added.

The explosives recovered in Ambala were procured by the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and were meant for the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) to set off bomb blasts in the capital, Delhi police had said Thursday.
