With a view to improving the quality of education provided in the municipal schools in city, the Ahmedabad Municipal School Board plans to change its current examination pattern. The education arm of the AMC wants to introduce weekly tests instead of quarterly tests and lay more emphasis on activity-based teaching and learning from June.

"We are planning to introduce weekly tests from the next academic year," said Lagdhir Desai, administrative officer of the school board. The board wants to reduce pressure of examination on the students, he said. At present, the school board conducts four examinations for evaluation of the students.

The new system is expected to help the board evaluate the progress of students comprehensively and continually. "Students and teachers will stay focused during the whole year instead of just during the quarterly examinations," Desai said. He added that the new system would help teachers identify students' weaknesses and mistakes and they would have time to work on them.

Moreover, the school board also wants the students to learn through activity, for which it will conduct training for teachers.
The teachers working with the board are happy. "The weekly examinations and activity-based teaching-learning process will definitely help the students, provided the teachers are able spend time in classrooms," said a teacher.

However, a few teachers are skeptical about the initiatives. They complained that most of the time they are occupied assignments other than teaching. Clerical work at school, various meetings, training sessions, census and election related duties, and various government functions take away their considerable time, they said.

"Majority of the students of school board belongs to the economically weaker sections. Their parents are not much aware about education and they cannot pay much attention to their studies, nor can they directly assist them," said a teacher from a municipal school in Jamalpur. "As such, the teachers' responsibilities at these schools are much more than that of those at private schools. To shoulder such responsibilities efficiently, we need time for class-work," she concluded.
