Keeping in mind the increasing traffic and the imminent possibilities of congestion from heavy flow in the near future on the road link between Saurashtra, South and Central Gujarat, the state government is mulling on developing a high speed six lane road corridors between Bagodara in Ahmedabad district and Vasad in Anand district, to ease snarls.

The Bagodara-Vataman-Tarapur-Vasad road which passes through the districts of Ahmedabad and Anand’s administrative boundaries is one of the most important highways that link Saurashtra, central Gujarat and south Gujarat. It is also the shortest route joining NH8A. According to government sources, considering the corridor’s high density now, it promises of increasing in the coming years.  Therefore, keeping the present and future demands in view, the state government has planned to convert the present two and three lane road in to a huge six-lane one.

The project corridor which has a total length of 101.90 km, takes off near Bagodara and moves through Vataman in Ahmedabad district and crosses Tarapur, Borsad, Adosar and Vasad in Anand before finally terminating at Vasad near the NH8. The present 2/3 lane structure is being upgraded to make it two lane with paved shoulders of 2.5 metres covering a total carriage way of 12 metres. The entire corridor will be upgraded to six lanes based on divided carriageway configuration. At present 30 metres width is available throughout the corridor and the government is in process of acquiring sufficient road width of up to 60 metres, depending on availability, to accommodate divided carriageway facility in the six lane road.

Approximate cost of the project has been estimated at around Rs884 crore. The bids have already been issued. The government is likely to finalise the bid soon for which, 18 bidders have participated so far. As the road has high frequency of vehicles, the government will not be required to give ‘viability gap fund’ (VGF) to the companies. The government will develop the project on ‘built, operate and transfer’ (BOT) basis. Two toll plazas will be constructed on the 101 km stretch.
