Sounds unconceivable! But the continuing election debacles of the ruling Left Front in West Bengal since 2009 have put principal rival Trinamool Congress, led by railway minister Mamata Banerjee, in a fix.

Since the Front’s big loss in the 2009 Lok Sabha election, Trinamool has been flooded with membership applications from CPI(M) workers, who want to abandon a “sinking ship”.

But the problem is, a majority of the applicants have criminal backgrounds and the Trinamool leadership is confused which one to accept and which one not to.

Party sources said Left Front disasters may have made Trinamool a popular destination for deserters but the quality of applicants was not up to the mark.

“Acceptance of applicants with criminal records will increase the party’s muscle power, but it will also malign its image. Besides, it cannot be ignored that such elements majorly contributed to weakening the Left Front over the last 33 years. They might do the same to us as well. In a way, CPI(M)’s present disaster is our future problem,” a senior Trinamool leader said.

However, Subrata Bakshi, the man in-charge of scrutinising new membership applications, said the Trinamool leadership was being careful, so that no undesirable element sneaks in.
“We are welcoming erstwhile CPI(M) workers, provided they do not have a criminal background. We have to be careful, so that CPI(M) does not plant moles in our party,” he said.

However, the senior Trinamool leader said the number of applications was so huge that it was practically impossible to check the background of each applicant. “Random checks are being conducted and a large section of undesirable elements is sneaking in,” he said.
