City cops, on Saturday night, arrested 23 people for gambling in the city in two separate incidents. Sources said that incidents of gambling are commonplace during the month of Shravan.

Crime branch officials first raided a house in Gurukrupa Housing Society near Vastrapur railway crossing and nabbed 13 people. Acting on a tip-off, cops raided house No. 3 at 7:30 pm, and nabbed the owner of the house Raju Desai along with 12 others. Police recovered Rs1.85 lakhs, 17 mobile phones and four two-wheelers from them. 

In another raid, Ranip police nabbed 10 people gambling inside an empty flat in Keshavnagar. Headed by police inspector of Ranip SK Vala, a team raided flat No.G-10 of Samta apartment and nabbed Rajesh Dhanji Patel along with nine others.

According to the police, majority of the accused are traders and businessmen from Sola, Vadaj, Naranpura and Bopal. They had gathered at Desai’s house for gambling. Police recovered Rs51,310 in cash from them. Apart from the cash, police also seized two cars and two motorcycles, worth Rs7 lakhs from them. 

Police sources said such incidents take place regularly during the month of Shravan.
