Security beefed up in Gujarat for Republic Day

Following the recent alert about terrorists planning to strike at an Indian or Air India plane, security has been heightened throughout Gujarat and more measures are planned for Republic Day on January 26.

Police sources said that steps had been taken to beef up security at sensitive places all across the state. In Ahmedabad, security has already been heightened at key places in the city, including Kalupur railway station, the airport and bus depots.

Officials said that special security measures will also be in place in Surendranagar where the state government will take out a ‘Shobha Yatra’ of the Constitution on Republic Day. Chief Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the yatra from the place in Surendranagar where the official Republic Day function is to be held.

Sources said that two additional platoons of police will be deployed at Surendranagar for the occasion.
