It was a day of fasts for the people of Bhavnagar district. Apart from chief minister Narendra Modi's fast at Jawahar Maidan, leader of opposition in the state assembly and Congress MLA from the city Shaktisinh Gohil observed his Satkarma fast at Jashonath Chowk and BJP MLA from Mahuva constituency Dr Kanubhai Kalsariya, observed his Samvedana fast in the presence of his supporters.

The CM gave a speech criticising groups working against Gujarat and also spoke on his development mantra and new political culture breeding by his Sadbhavna Mission.

Sadbhavna Mission has laid the foundation stone of an entirely new political culture in this country, which is sure to prove the political pundits wrong if ever they attempted to evaluate the state's achievements with a jaundiced eye.

He said Gujarat has registered a 10% growth in agriculture, against a national average of 2.5%. He expressed pity at the Centre's futile efforts to destabilize Gujarat.

Some 50,000 people visited the venue of Modi's fast and 10,000 of them joined him in the fast. He said Gujarat's state-level Republic Day function as well as the 150th anniversary of Prabhashanker Patna will be held in Bhavnagar. The city's development will increase by leap and bounds after the Dholera SIR, Ro-Ro service and Kalpsar across the Gulf of Cambay come up, he said.

On the other side, Gohil's fast was attended by thousands of his supporters. The leader of the opposition criticised the CM's fasts and said Modi had made plenty of promises to the people of Bhavnagar, but did nothing to fulfill them.

He said people of Bhavnagar were very angry with false promises of the CM and it was reflected in the presence of people at the Congress meeting. Now people have realised that CM was squandering public money for publicity stunts. Modi is working to promote the interests of a few favourite businessmen only, Gohil claimed.

Dr Kanubhai Kalsariya's Samvedana fast at Ghogha gate area in the city, was attended by around 6,000 people including 500-700 women. Veteran political leader Sanat Mehta and social activist Chunibhai Vaidya accompanied Dr Kalsariya.

The BJP MLA, who fought against his own party for securing farmers' interests, said instead of organising such costly functions the government should cater to people's needs and requirements.

Dr Kalsariya said, "We are not against any industries, but because of government's faulty industrial policy, the agriculture land is at stake in the state and farmers are suffering a lot. The government should change its policy."
