“It has come to my notice that farmers are unhappy with the deal between government and Ford. I will look into the issue in the coming days,” said BJP MLA Dr Kanubhai Kalsaria, in a meeting held with the farmers on Sunday. Kalsariya was in Vadodara to attend a meeting of Gujarat Khedut Samaj (GKJ) of which he was appointed president recently.

According to Kalsaria, farmers in Sanand are unhappy with the state government’s decision to allocate 460 acres of land to Ford India to let them, set up their factory in Sanand. According to him, no farmer wants to give away his land but they agree because they are helpless in front of the government.

Kalsaria had earlier spearheaded an agitation against Nirma’s cement plant at Mahuva. He later decided to revive GKS to address problems affecting farmers in Gujarat. “Majority of the 460 acres (land) allotted to Ford is arable. I have assured the affected farmers that I will look into the matter,” said Kalsaria. He further said that he was approached by farmers from Sanand on Saturday during his visit to Vadodara.

In a telephonic conversation with DNA, Kalsaria said that he wants to unite all farmers in Gujarat against acquisition of arable land by the government. He also expressed concern regarding the upcoming aluminium plant near Anjar in Kutch. He says that the proposed land in used by farmers to grow dates. “The government must stop this practice of gifting fertile land to industries,” he added.

Kalsaria believes that farmers are unhappy with these acquisitions but lack of unity amongst them prevents them from standing against such government actions. He also wants the government to understand the importance of agriculture.

Kalsaria supports the land acquisition bill proposed by the rural development ministry. Apart from land acquisition, he is also planning to focus on issues like regular water supply and electricity for all farmers in the state. “Gujarat government is only focusing on industrialisation. They forget that it is agriculture, which is the backbone of any economy,” added Kalsaria.
