In yet more embarrassment for the chief minister, his aides, besides the state’s bureaucrats and police, the special investigation team (SIT) has embarked on its probe against complaints filed by Jakia Jafri, who has alleged the Modi-government of aiding and abetting the 2002 communal riots. The Supreme Court appointed probe body, SIT, has also in the meantime, sent its interim progress report about the complaint to the apex court. The case is likely to come up for hearing next month.

With the submission of the interim report, the SIT can seek extension for filing its final report regarding the complaint. The probe body was unable to finish the enormous task within the stipulated time of three months, especially after former BJP MLA Kalu Maliwad filed petition in the Gujarat high court seeking stay against the probe. The SIT already started taking statements from people in connection with the allegations raised in the Jafri’s complaint as well as collecting documents.

Highly placed sources in the probe agency has confirmed that it has already submitted the progress report to the Supreme court and that further hearing in the case is likely to come up in August. The sources, however, denied divulging further details on the report while maintaining confidentiality looking at the sensitivity of the issue and since it is sub judice. The Supreme court on July 27 this year issued directions to conduct enquiry and file a report within three months on the allegations. The term for filing the report will end this Monday.

The SIT, however, confirmed that the probe is on. “We have already started probe regarding the complaint as the Gujarat high court didn’t grant a stay against our action,” said Geeta Johri, convenor of the SIT. She has added that statements of four people have already been taken including that of Teesta Setalwad of Citizens of Justice and Peace (CJP), Zakia Jaffri, and former DGP RB Sreekumar,” she said.

In 2006, Jafri had moved a written complaint before the director general of police (DGP) to lodge an FIR against chief minister Narendra Modi, then ministers, MLAs, IAS and IPS officers who were in key positions then. However, when the state did not pay heed to her complaints, she moved a petition in the Gujarat high court.

Even the high court directed Jafri to approach the metropolitan court on the issue. She and the CJP then moved the Supreme court, alleging Modi and 62 others of aiding and abetting the rioteers, especially in the Gulberg society massacre, in which 69 people were butchered including former Congress parliamentarian and Jakia Jafri’s husband, Ahesan Jafri.
