Rain-battered coastal districts of North Tamil Nadu, reeling under the influence of cyclone 'Laila', had a respite today with the downpour abating.

Official sources said the unseasonal heavy rains that threw normal life out of gear in the state had claimed the lives of two persons.

Fishermen, who were evacuated from coastal areas, returned to their homes. However, they did not venture into the sea which was rough.

In Chennai, normal traffic was restored on all main thoroughfares after rain water receded. However, low lying areas remained waterlogged. The city recorded 10 cm rain in the last 24 hours, ending 8.30 am today.

The meteorological office said 'Laila' was showing signs of weakening and has moved closer towards the Andhra coast.
