Last Thursday, the Law Commission report containing recommendations aimed at preventing bigamy through conversion to Islam was presented to Parliament. Though the government is yet to take a position in the matter, the suggestions are likely to meet opposition from Muslim and Christian religious groups.

They don’t want the government to stay away from the individual’s right to choose his/her religion. "No law can impinge on the fundamental right to religion. The recommendations violate Articles 25 and 26 of the Constitution," said Dr Kamal Farooqui, chairman, Delhi Minorities Commission. Rajya Sabha MP and Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind leader Mehmood Madani believes there is a need to stop people from converting only for a second marriage, but believes individuals have the right to choose their religion. "If there is a way to stop converting for bigamy, I am for it. But nobody should be stopped from choosing their religion," said Madani.

Even the Christian community has not taken kindly to the suggestions. “These [recommendations] violate the basic principles of the Constitution and are detrimental to the freedom of faith,” said John Dayal, president of the Catholics Association.
