Describing the police action against Baba Ramdev-led "five-star" protest as "unwarranted and unjustified", the Communist Party of India (CPI) today alleged the episode exposed the government's "malafide intentions" in misleading people on the issue of corruption.

The party also came down heavily on the UPA government for not taking political parties and Parliament into confidence while dealing with the agitations by Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev against corruption and accused it of "undermining" democratic process.

The Left party also said the fast turns and twists in events around the yoga guru's protest which culminated in his arrest has "exposed the government's malafide intention to mislead the public on the issue of corruption and black money".

The CPI, in a statement, said it was no more a secret that the two sides had reached an agreement even before the beginning of the "five-star protest", which was suppressed using "brutal force". The police action after midnight was "totally unwanted and unjustified".

The party said it had always demanded action to bring back black money stashed abroad.

Party national secretary D Raja asked why the government did not act against Ramdev's agitation when it was clear from "the beginning that right-wing organistaions like RSS were involved in the protest."

"The government is alone responsible for the current situation... it should have acted then... the government has undermined democratic institutions be it Anna Hazare's agitation or Ramdev's protest," he said.

He alleged that RSS and other saffron outfits were "remote-controlling" the agitation by Baba Ramdev and accused the BJP of being "hypocrtic".
