Five members of a family were run over by the Rajdhani Express at Faridabad New Town Railway Station on Wednesday.

Police said the victims included a six-year-old girl who had fallen on the tracks. The other members of the family died trying to save her.

“The girl was playing on a platform when she tripped and fell. Four members of her family immediately jumped on the tracks to save her, but they all came under the train,” a police officer said.

“The family was so desperate to save the child that it did not realise that the Thiruvananthapuram-bound train was approaching,” he said.

The girl’s father Kripa Shankar, mother Indu, sister Pooja and grandmother were among the dead. Only the child’s grandfather remained unharmed.

“The family was waiting at the station to board a train to Hardwar to take part in the Kumbh Mela,” police said. A railway official said the family won’t be compensated since it had not “bought tickets”.
