A mentally disturbed youth from Uttar Pradesh was behind the murder of a college girl in Delhi as he wanted to avenge the humiliation he suffered when he was beaten up for stalking her three years ago, police said today.

The alleged murderer has been identified as Vijay alias Ram Singh, 25, hailing from Viswan village in Sitapur.

Police zeroed in on Vijay after investigators detained his two friends - Tabrez and Ashraf - who allegedly harboured and helped him flee the capital on March 10, two days after Radhika Talwar, 20, was shot dead outside Ram Lal Anand college in south Delhi where she was studying.

"His original name is Ram Singh but he lives in Delhi as Vijay. Investigations have revealed that he has a psychopathic streak. He is learnt to have been involved in stalking women in his village," HGS Dhaliwal, deputy commissioner of police (south), told reporters.

His two friends, who were detained told police that he was beaten up three-and-a-half years ago in Naraina village by a local for allegedly harassing Radhika and he wanted to avenge the humiliation, Dhaliwal said.

"He had a deep grudge against Radhika and used to tell his friends whenever he gets an opportunity he will take revenge," Dhaliwal said.

Vijay had left Delhi after he was beaten up and went to Mumbai. Forty five days ago he had returned to the capital and approached his former employer Kamal for a job but was refused due to his alleged involvement in stalking.

Vijay then approached his friends in Rohini.

"After the murder, Vijay went to his friend's place where he stayed till yesterday. He had told them he got involved in a scuffle in Naraina. However, due to the extensive media coverage, he felt that he may be arrested soon. His friends took him to Gurgaon to another acquaintance who did not help him. Then Tabreez and Ashraf took Vijay to Gurgaon railway station and left him there," Dhaliwal said.

Tabrez and Ashraf were detained from Sitapur today.

All the three were employed in knitting and weaving units.

Asked how they zeroed in on the two youths who helped Vijay, the police official said this followed search for acquaintances of those who were beaten up earlier for stalking.

"We spoke to local polling agents of various political parties who knew the voters in the area as well as those who did not figure in the voters list. We also spoke to owners of ration shops, grocery shops and milk booths from whom we got a tip-off," Dhaliwal said.
