The Bangalore police have ordered an enquiry into the alleged assault on a 27-year-old Selina, by the RT Nagar police who allegedly harassed her and used foul language on Sunday.

Selina, a resident of V Nagenahalli and a school teacher, alleged that RT Nagar police assaulted her on Sunday night. They took her to the police station at around 8 pm and  interrogated her till 11.30 pm. During the interrogation, there were no women police in the station.

“I was in the police station. They took me to a room there where four to five policemen hit me with lathis. I was not even allowed to inform my brother,” she said.

Umadevi, president of Shivashakti Mahila Sangha, said that Selina, a divorcee, was accused of having an illicit relationship with her family doctor Prakash. His wife who suspected this lodged a complaint in the RT Nagar police station.

Umadevi alleged that the victim is still unable to come out of the mental shock. They brought this issue to the notice of the State Human Rights Commission and the police commissioner. In a petition given to police commissioner Shankar M Bidari, they stated that Selina was forced to marry him, but she refused.

Acting on Prakash’s wife’s complaint, the police called Selina for an inquiry on December 22 and allegedly tortured her. However, when she fainted, she was rushed to Chaithanya Hospital in RT Nagar.

The police then informed her brother Harris who took her to Bowring Hospital. The doctors diagnosed swelling on her back, thighs and other parts of the body. They certified that the injuries were caused by cane blows.

A missing complaint on December 21 was filed by the doctor’s wife when the husband did not come home for two days. She suspected that Selina had taken him away from her to get married.

So the police interrogated Selina. However, Prakash returned after two days.

The commissioner has ordered assistant commissioner of police (JC Nagar subdivision) C Munirathnam Naidu to investigate the case.
