Posthumous Ashok Chakra for Gurez battle hero

Lieutenant Navdeep Singh, who died foiling an infiltration attempt by Pakistan-based terrorists along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir last year, will be awarded the highest peace-time gallantry award Ashok Chakra on the Republic Day.

President Pratibha Patil will present the medal to the officer posthumously at the Republic Day parade in capital on Thursday in which prime minister of Thailand Yingluck Shinawatra will be the chief guest. The medal will be received by his father Honorary Captain (retd) Joginder Singh.

According to the ministry of defence, the President has approved 368 Gallantry awards and other Defence decorations to Armed Forces personnel and others on the eve of the Republic Day. It includes One Ashoka Chakra, three Kirti Chakra, 16 Shaurya Chakra and 73 Sena Medal (Gallantry).

Three Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry), two Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry), 28 Param Vishisht Seva Medal, one Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, six Bar to Ati Vishisht  Seva Medal, 45 Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, four Yudh Seva Medal, three Bar to Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty), 37 Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty), 08 Nao Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty), 14 Vayu Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty), 06 Bar to Vishisht Seva Medal and 115 Vishisht Seva Medal, have also been approved.

Lt Singh and his commando platoon were deployed in the Kanzalwan sub-sector on the night of August 19 following the intelligence inputs about a desperate bid to infiltrate by a large group of terrorists.

“Leading from the front this braveheart quickly sited his ambush, correctly appreciating the path that the terrorists would adopt. In a display of sheer unbridled courage, Lt Singh allowed the unsuspecting terrorists to walk into his trap”, said a defence spokesman at Srinagar.

Springing his copy book ambush at the last moment, Lt Singh single-handedly engaged and eliminated three terrorists from close range.
