Chief minister Narendra Modi’s one-day Sadbhavna fast in Porbandar on Sunday is in the eye of the storm after posters welcoming Modi were put across the city by local leaders charged with involvement in serious criminal offences.

Modi will be in Porbandar on Sunday as part of his Sadbhavna mission. Meanwhile, Congress MP Vitthal Radadiya will also sit on a fast in the city. The day is likely to become controversial as Porbandar is the one of the political hubs of Saurashtra and leaders from both Congress and BJP are leaving no stone unturned in making their fasting plans a success.

Congress has already raised objections to the idea of BJP leaders with alleged criminal involvement welcoming Modi with posters across the city.

“People facing charges of mineral theft, murder, attempt to murder and attacks on government officials, are welcoming Modi. He (Modi) has sadbhavna (harmony) for mafias,” said Congress in a statement.

“The mining mafias have also taken up the responsibility to ensure that huge masses visit Modi’s Sadbhavna fast along with government machinery,” the Congress said.

The main opposition party alleged that Babu Bokhiriya, one of the leaders welcoming Modi, is facing charges of Rs554 crore mineral theft in Porbandar and is currently out on bail. Another leader, Karsan Odedara, MLA of Kutiyana and brother of dreaded gangster Bhima Dula, is facing over a dozen charges, including attempt to murder.

Others facing criminal charges are former member of Porbandar district panchayat Gigan Malde Bokhiriya, who is an accused in over a dozen offences, president of BJP’s youth wing of Porbandar unit Bhima Odedara, who is an accused in a scam of Rs75 lakh in NREGA scheme and Keshu Sida, former member of district panchayat, who faces charges of illegal liquor consumption and atrocity.

It may be noted that the BJP was put in an embarrassing situation when an accused in liquor trafficking in Gujarat was seen with veteran BJP leader LK Advani while he was entering Gujarat for Jan Chetna Yatra.
