The Gujarat Science City has organised an illustrative exhibition, slide and film show, and scientific interaction on the ozone layer, aiming to sensitise school and college students and general visitors to the science regarding the ozone layer and its importance in protecting life on Earth.

Around 350 children will receive lessons on ozone awareness and a hands-on experience at the Gujarat Science City on Wednesday, marking the beginning of a weeklong programme celebrating the International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer. On this occasion, the science city has prepared a model of the stratosphere depicting the ozone layer as well as the biosphere.

In addition to schoolchildren, teachers from the Training College, Bhavnagar and Indus Institute of Technology will get a chance to understand the concept of ozone science. “We had never realised, nor had we been so sensitive towards this precious layer, which helps keep us healthy. The ozone layer protects us and we should protect the ozone. For this, we will introduce the use of ozone-friendly substances in our daily life,” said several engineering students taking part in the programme. The Gujarat Science City is also distributing a detailed quiz to schools and colleges, aiming at spreading further knowledge about the issue to students and teachers alike.

To increase reach among the community, a phone-in programme on Gyan Vani Radio was organised on Tuesday. “The discovery of the ozone ‘hole’ in 1985 shocked the world. It is regarded as one of this century’s major environmental disasters. Many experimental studies on plants and animals and clinical studies on humans have shown the harmful effects of excessive exposure to UV-B radiation. It is estimated that every 2.5 per cent depletion in the ozone layer results in around five lakh skin cancer patients on Earth,” said Narottam Sahoo, senior scientist, Gujarat Science City.

“The awareness activities at science city are intended to teach children as well as adults about the potentially harmful effects of exposure to the sun, the need to wear appropriate protective clothing and hats, and to encourage children to play in shaded areas,” he said.

Manmohan Sarin, senior professor and scientist of the geoscience division at the Physical Research Laboratory, and Dr Nisha K Shah, head of the environmental science department of Gujarat University, will interact with the audience on the different aspects of ozone education and awareness, and health consciousness.
