But as the day wore on, temperatures not only remained on the higher side, dusty winds also assailed the city making life hell for all, particularly commuters.
"As if the severe heat was not enough, now we have dusty winds to worsen matters. It has become difficult to even walk on the streets in such weather. I wonder how difficult it would be for two-wheeler drivers," said Nirali Raval, a resident of Vastrapur.
The met department has meanwhile predicted that the cloudy atmosphere will continue for one more day before the weather clears up. On the dusty winds experienced in the city, IMD director Kamaljit Ray said that dust storms in Rajasthan and thunder storms in some parts of north India were to be blamed.
"The western disturbances have also contributed to this. The atmosphere is likely to remain cloudy for another day and temperatures may fall a bit," said Ray.
The city on Wednesday recorded a maximum temperature of 40.8 degree Celsius, two degrees above normal. The minimum temperature recorded for the day was 23.1 degree Celsius. Rajkot recorded the highest temperature of 41.1 degree Celsius. Ahmedabad is likely to record a maximum temperature of 41 degree Celsius on Thursday.
While many people chose to stay indoors those who had to go out were seen covering their faces to escape the dust and wind.
"I am in marketing and have to be in the field. The heat is severe and the dusty winds are not helping matters. I guess there is no escaping the weather," said Mihir Chhabara, as he stopped to have a glass of sugarcane juice from a vendor.
