Orissa police today beefed up border security and launched search operations at hospitals and private clinics in the state following reports that top Maoist leader Kishenji was injured in Thursday's encounter in West Bengal.

"We have been searching all hospitals, private clinics including ayurvedic treatment centres, to locate injured Maoists, if any," Mayurbhanj Superintendent of Police Dayal Gangwar told PTI over phone today.

When asked about the chances of Kotewar Rao alias Kishenji's taking shelter in Mayurbhanj district, Gangwar did not rule out the possibility.

"I cannot say anything in this regard. We are doing our job," he said.

Besides launching a combing operation in Similipal area, security personnel were deployed round the clock in strategic points bordering West Bengal to prevent possible infiltration, Gangwar said.

With Similipal National Park closed to tourists for a year now and considered a haven for Maoists due to its proximity to the West Bengal border, a senior police official said "some Maoists including their leaders might have sneaked into the park."

The possibility of Kishenji and other Maoists entering the park could not be ruled out, a senior intelligence officer said, adding according to reports a group of top Maoist leaders had met recently in Mayurbhanj.

As part of Orissa police's efforts to check Maoist infiltration from West Bengal, villages in border areas have been sensitised, Gangwar said.

Since Maoist-hit Lalgarh in West Bengal is not far from Similipal, extra vigil needs to be maintained in the area, the officer said.
