With separatists trying hard to fan tension again, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said full force of law will be brought to bear on the people (cops) accused in the custodial death of Nazim Rashid aka Naveed Anjum in a bid to avoid the repeat of the 2010 unrest

“We are not interested in covering up any of the facts or in protecting any of these who are responsible for the death (of Nazim). We will ensure that the full force of the law is brought to bear on these people that will make example out of so that no body ever again can treat the law in such a shabby manner”, Omar told reporters on Monday.

Unconvinced by the government probe, Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani has stepped up ante and called for Kashmir bandh on Wednesday against the killing.

“We are deeply hurt by the human rights violations in Sopore, Damhal Hanjipora and Wanigam at the hands of forces. Hartal is the only way to register our protest and therefore people should observe strike on August 3”, Geelani said.

The government had already suspended in-charge of the Special Operation Group (SOG), guard commander and sentry.  The deputy superintendent of police (operations) has been attached.

Minister of state for home Nasir Aslam Wani accompanied by Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda and other officers visited Sopore and interacted and informed the respectable citizens about the action taken against those who are allegedly responsible for today’s incident.

"I will not tolerate any delay whatsoever. I have told minister of state for home that I want all the facts to be made available. I want case to be processes. I want action to be taken. I want this done in days not weeks or months”, said Omar.

Chief Minister said the government should be given time to ensure that nothing is done that legally compromises the case.

“I do not want a situation where we can act in haste because you expect us to and then we have a case that is faulty or flawed and anybody who is guilty is able to take advantage of this”, he said.

Tension is palpable in Sopore on the second day in a row. Heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces was made to avoid any law and order problem.

Independent MLA from Langate Sheikh Abdul Rasheed was arrested when he was leading a procession towards Sopore. Police stopped the procession at Wangam on Handwara-Baramulla highway and arrested Rasheed along with his supporters.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti was prevented from leading a march to Sopore. She staged a sti on the raods when she was not allowed to march to Sopore.

A large posse of police was posted to prevent her from proceding. On Sunday she was placed under house arrest to prevent from leading a march.

Both Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani and moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq continues to be under house arrest.

“Whatever the offence the slain youth was allegedly involved, there is no justification for third degree methods that must have been used to extract information from the deceased and the perpetrators of the crime must be punished adequately”, said Saifuddin Soz President, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee.
