A new initiative from Delhi chief secretary Rakesh Mehta allows people to install solar power generation units on their rooftops and citizens will even be able to sell the excess power to the government.
Delhiites may soon be able to earn by selling solar power if a novel initiative to promote clean energy by the city government goes through.
As per the proposal, people will be encouraged to install solar power generation units on their rooftops and they will even be able to sell the excess power to the government.
The initiative, first of its kind in the entire country, is being taken by the environment department of the city government.
Chief secretary Rakesh Mehta, who is behind the novel initiative, said the government is even considering providing subsidies to the people wanting to install solar power generation units on their rooftops.
The proposal is likely to be taken up by the Delhi Cabinet next week.
According to the proposal, any individual or institution having a roof space of at least 50 square yard will be able to install solar power generation unit of upto
two megawatt and private power distribution companies would even buy the excess power.
The solar power generation unit will be connected to the main supply line of the discoms and the excess power generated by an individual or institution will go directly to the grid, said an official.
He said the money earned by an individual will be adjusted by the discoms with his or her power bill.
As per the proposal, a separate company will be formed by the government to carry out the entire project.
Anyone willing to install such generation units will not require to invest their own money as government will arrange bank finance, besides providing subsidy.
The official said the total cost of equipment having capacity of producing one mw of power would be around Rs2 lakh.
