The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) today said there won't be any radiological impact in India from the tsunami-stricken Fukushima nuclear plants in northeastern Japan.
Only the areas within 20km radius of the Fukushima Daiichi atomic reactors are being evacuated and fears of the radiation coming to India were meaningless, according to NPCIL chairman and managing director SK Jain.
"It is observed from data reported by Indian Environmental Radiation Monitoring Network that there has been no increase in the radiation levels above normal background in India," Jain said.
He said the Indian atomic power plants are constantly upgraded to match current levels of safety requirements and the events in Japan cannot slow down the country's nuclear energy programme in any way.
Indian organisations have already announced that they would revisit all safety aspects of nuclear plants in the country after the situation in Japan, Jain said.
"Indian reactors have successfully withstood the strong Bhuj earthquake and tsunami. We will not compromise on safety and definitely make a revisit," he added.
