Move over empty homes and shut offices, the latest muse of burglars in the city are marriage venues! That's right - two theft incidents that took place over the last couple of days reveal that thugs in Ahmedabad have altered their modus operandi, keeping in mind the wedding glitter all around.

Now, well-dressed young boys in the age group of 12 to 14 make their way into wedding venues, mingle with the crowds, and when no one is looking, make away with valuables.

Anita Chaudhary, a resident of Bhavati Satyakam society in Satellite, had lodged a complaint of theft with the Vastrapur police station a couple of days back. She had stated that someone stole her cash and jewellery worth Rs4,81,500 in total, during a marriage ceremony at a party plot in Vastrapur.

Similarly, Bharat Brahmbhatt, a resident of Jaynagar Society in Maninagar, lodged a complaint of theft with the Vejalpur police. He stated that a young boy, between 12 to 14 years of age, stole his bag of money, containing cash and valuables worth Rs1.52 lakh, during marriage rituals in a city-based hotel.

As far as Chaudhary's case is concerned, cops say it is going to be very tough to find out whose handiwork the theft was. According to Vastrapur police inspector YR Gamit, the theft occurred in a fraction of a second, when Anita shifted her attention to a ritual taking place at the wedding venue.

In Brahmbhatt's case, the cops said he was busy performing a ritual called 'kanyadaan', when the young boy made away with his bag. Despite Brahmbhatt's best efforts, the boy could not be traced.

"We have managed to get enough leads in connection with the complaint lodged by Brahmbhatt. We are looking into the matter," said police inspector JM Bharwad of Vejalpur.

"There is no denying the fact that lots of gangs in the city are targetting marriage venues specifically. In Brahmbhatt's case, we have come to know that the boy accused of committing the theft lives in one part of the city, while the crime was committed in another part of the city," Bharwad added.

The modus operandi of such gangs is simple. They send their well-dressed boys, in the age group of 10 to 15, to marriage ceremonies. These young boys mingle with the revelers quite easily, and neither the bride's side nor the groom's suspects them. The moment the boys chance an opportunity, they make away with valuables.
