Amongst 200 teams who had participated for BAJA SAE's virtual event, 80 teams, including Nirma Institute, made it to the second round, wherein they have to put together their own vehicle. President of SAE India Nirma Collegiate Club, Ronak Shah said,

"We have been working on our vehicle since July last year. BAJA SAEINDIA 2011 is scheduled for January 27-30 at NATRAX facilities of NATRiP (National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project). The track is of nearly 3.7km and our vehicle has to pass the test of treading on this rugged track."

Shah explained that during the race, the vehicle will be tested for an endurance run for four hours at a stretch and will only halt for refuelling. A team of 24 members, including two girls, worked on the ATV vehicle, and features such as a five-point safety harness, arm restraints, neck guard, helmet, gloves, shin guard, fire-proof jacket for the driver and an extinguisher have been mounted on to the vehicle. The vehicle also has semi-automatic gear shifting mechanism by a servo motor.

"The roll case of the vehicle is made of steel with minimum thickness and ensures that, in case of an accident, there is minimal impact on the driver. More so, there is also a metal sheet provided in the vehicle that separates the engine compartment from the driver's compartment. While the vehicle itself weighs around 280kg, " said Shah.
