NHRC registers over 80,000 fresh human rights violations cases in 2009-10

While the National Human Rights Commission received a mere 496 complaints regarding human rights violations in 1993, the year of its establishment, it rose to over 82,000 cases in 2009-10, Commission chairman, Justice KG Balakrishnan said.

National Human Rights Commission today said that it had registered 82,021 fresh cases of human rights violations in 2009-10 and completed action in 86,050 others.

While the commission received a mere 496 complaints regarding human rights violations in 1993, the year of its establishment, it rose to over 82,000 cases in 2009-10, Commission chairman, Justice KG Balakrishnan said at a function in Kochi after being conferred the honorary doctor of law degree by the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT).

The NHRC has witnessed a phenomenal increase in the number of complaints it has received over the years indicating not only a growing awareness among the people, but also the increased faith that they have reposed in it for safeguarding their rights, he said.

While National Human Rights institutions like the NHRC have a significant role to play in the promotion and protection of human rights in all spheres, including social, economic, political and cultural, they can at best work as catalysts in assisting efforts towards protecting and promoting human rights of the most vulnerable groups,

The commission is also seeking to explore and understand the various ways in which the business sector is undermining the phenomenal strides made in the arena of human right. The acute strain on the environment, damage to the planet's ecological support systems and widening gaps between the rich and poor have resulted from rapid industrialisation and global economic processes, he said.

Delhi Metro chairman, E Sreedharan, who was conferred the Honorary degree of Doctor of science, said Delhi metro has shown to the world that India is capable of planning and executing technically complex mega projects to internationals tandards.

The konkan railway and Delhi Metro projects are shinning examples of how government projects can be completed on time and without cost over-runs.

The Delhi Metro runs about 2800 trains trips every day to carry 15 lakh passengers and puncuality performance is 99.97%.

On delays, he said each day a project is delayed, the cost goes up. In Delhi Metro phase II the cost of delays as about Rs2.5 crore per day.

He said that there is acute shortage of good competant engineers.

There is a need for our technical institutions to improve the quality of technical education and instil a pride for their profession, he added.

Kathakali Maestro Kalamandalam Ramakutty Nair also was conferred honorary doctorate for his contributions to the traditional dance form of Kerala.

Kerala gvernor, RS Gavai, conferred the doctorates at a special convocation in which state education minister, MA Baby and CUSAT vice-chancellor, Dr Ramachandran Thekkedath were also present.
