Studies will be fun for students of class IX as they'll experience new and innovative teaching techniques from July 29. A pilot project aimed at including scientific teaching methods will be experimentally carried out for the students of class IX.

A special two-day training programme was organised from July 27, where 425 participants consisting of teachers from schools in Ahmedabad and principals from schools in Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Anand, attended.

The experiment will be conducted in around 70 schools, out of which 40 are in the city, two from Vadodara, two from Rajkot, two from Surat, one from Anand and the rest from Gandhinagar. This one-year experiment is aimed at enhancing the process of teaching and learning. The new technique will focus on the scientific method which will help in holistic development of the students.

UN Rathod, assistant secretary, Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, said, "We are focusing on the all round development of the child. Through the 'Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation' technique, we want to evaluate students on a continuous basis and help them improve in the areas they need to."

The new techniques include 'Formative Assessment' and 'Summative Assessment'. Co-scholastic activities will also be included, which will help the students in developing their life skills.

The formative assessment will be carried out in four parts; each part will have a weightage of 10%.

The summative assessment will bear 30% weightage and will be carried out twice a year. "Thus, we will have a 100% automatic semester system for standard IX. 40% of formative and 60% summative grades will be recorded in the mark sheet," added Rathod. Thus, there will be no annual examinations for the students, just the bi-yearly summative examination.

Talking about the future, Rathod revealed that if this experiment is successful, then it would be implemented in all the schools across Gujarat. "We hope the system works well. Then we'll implement it from next academic year," added Rathod.
