National Micro Insurance driver for RPLI launched

Sholurmattam (Nilgiris Dist TN): The National Micro Insurance Drive for Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) was launched by union communications and IT minister A Raja here today.

Launching the drive, Raja said PLI, started as a welfare scheme for postal employees in 1884,has been extended to cover Central and State government employees, personnel of defence Forces and paramilitary and emloyees of PSUs and banks.

RPLI was introduced by the postal department in 1995 with a specific mandate to cover people in rural areas with emphasis on weaker section in general and women in particular, he said.

Till March 2009, there were around four million PLI policies and around 7.8 million RPLIs, Raja said.

Stating that existing RPLI policies with a sum assured of Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 have been propagated in this scheme, he said more than 1.3 million rural people have been covered within just one month.

Besides postal staff and Gramin dak sewaks, direct agents, anganwadi workers, SHGs and cooperatives would be engaged to help people get themselves covered under RPLI, he said.

Raja also distributed policy documents to insurants and licences to direct agents.
