Against the backdrop of the Congress high command sending out a strong message to YS Jaganmohan Reddy over his 'Odarpu yatra', ministers in the K Rosaiah cabinet in Andhra Pradesh have asserted their support to the chief minister.

The ministers defended the government's handling of the situation when Jagan undertook the yatra in defiance of
the high command's directive not to go ahead on May 28.

Jagan and his supporters criticised the government for taking him into custody in the wake of violence at Mahabubabad railway station with Telangana supporters opposing his visit.

"The government wanted to prevent untoward incidents. We felt that people and democracy are more important than individuals. That is why we took the decision (to take Jagan into custody). It was correct," Panchayat Raj minister B Satyanarayana told reporters.

Major industries minister K Lakshminarayana indicated that Congress would fight the 2014 assembly elections under
the leadership of K Rosaiah.

Endowments minister G Venkata Reddy said the directive
of the high command should be followed.

Some of the ministers were believed to be loyalists of YSR and they used to meet Jagan when there was a campaign to make him the chief minister.

The Congress high command had asked Jagan not to go ahead with his 'Odarpu yatra' in Telangana in view of the surcharged atmosphere in the region. Defying the directive, Jagan, however, embarked on the yatra. The tour was to console the families of those who allegedly committed suicide or died of shock over the death of his father YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

In the wake of Jagan's defiance, senior Congress leader and Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee has made it clear yesterday that Jagan will have to call off his yatra.
