Metro services in Kolkata were shut down for nearly 50 minutes as a precautionary measure on Wednesday following the high intensity earthquake that hit the Sumatra coast, which was felt across the metropolis.

The services were suspended from 2.42pm to 3.30pm, Deputy General Manager (general) of Metro Railway, Pratyush Sinha told PTI.

Sinha said the temporary shut-down enabled engineers to inspect the tunnels for any damage or subsidence of the tracks and any damage to electrical installations.

The services resumed at 3.31pm after the engineers gave the green signal, he said.

Trains were stopped mid-journey and passengers asked to get down, Sinha said, adding it was for the first time in the histroy of Kolkata Metro Rail that services were suspended due to a tremor.
