Metro commuters in the national capital had a difficult time today as trains on two over-crowded lines were delayed by at least 30 minutes during the morning rush hour due to problems in the over-head electrification (OHE) and software malfunctioning.

Services on the line 3 (Dwarka Sec-21 to Noida City Centre/Anand Vihar) and Line 2 (Jehangirpuri-HUDA City Centre) were affected in the morning rush hours. The two lines account for nearly 60% of the total Metro ridership in Delhi.

While the delay on the line 3 was due to "interlocking problem" at the Dwarka Sector-21 station resulting in loss of train identification numbers, trains on Line 2 were delayed after a problem in the OHE was detected between Arjangarh and Guru Dronacharya Metro stations in Gurgaon.

After the problem in OHE, which has become a very common feature on this corridor particularly, trains were run on a single track between the two stations from 6:15 to 11:55am, a Metro spokesperson said, adding that services between Central Secretariat-Arjangarh and Guru Dronacharya-HUDA City Centre were not affected.

However, passengers alleged that the trains were delayed by at least 30 minutes on the line.

With the incident occurring during the morning rush hours, there were long queues on platforms. People jostled with each other to enter the trains.

This is the third incident in 20 days on the Metro network due to a problem in the OHE. On November 19, train services on the Gurgaon line were delayed for over four hours due to a problem on the OHE system.

DMRC chief E Sreedharan has constituted a committee to look into the November 19 incident and suggest steps to prevent such incidents in the future.

Again on November 28, the same line witnessed disruption of services for over an hour due to the same problem. On December 3, trains were delayed by at least 30 minutes during the morning rush hour due to a technical problem in a train.

On line 3, trains were delayed for at least 30 minutes after train identification numbers were lost resulting in the non-movement of trains. This resulted in bunching of trains, the spokesperson said.

"Though the problem was rectified in around 15 minutes, the bunching of trains on the line led to delays and normalcy was restored after 40 minutes," the spokesperson said.

Passengers claimed that the trains on the line, which sees the maximum footfall of 6 lakh on weekdays, were delayed for nearly an hour and there was no announcement on it.

Anamika, a media professional, said it took her more than an hour to reach Rajiv Chowk from Dwarka.

"It usually takes 45 minutes. But I took double the time today. It was very bad. The trains were over-crowded," she said.
