Maoist strikes decline in Bihar: Official data

Maoist attacks have declined in Bihar during the Nitish Kumar rule with the ultras killing 160 civilians and 77 security personnel between 2006-10 as against 668 and 48 respectively during 2001-05 when RJD was in power.

Maoist attacks have declined in Bihar during the Nitish Kumar rule with the ultras killing 160 civilians and 77 security personnel between 2006-10 as against 668 and 48 respectively during 2001-05 when RJD was in power.

The ultras carried out 338 incidents of violence during 2006-10 in which 160 civilians and 77 security men lost their lives, while in 2001-05, 668 civilians and 48 security personnel were killed in 1,117 strikes by Maoists, a police data said.

The number of encounters with the Maoists also went down to 94 during 2006-10 as against 117 in 2001-05, they said, adding that the police unearthed 14 arms training camps of the rebels during Kumar's rule as against three when Rabri Devi was in power.

While 132 weapons were looted by the Maoists during the JD(U)-BJP rule, a total of 151 rifles were looted during the RJD regime.

The number of arrested Maoists was 1,881 and 1,160 in 2006-10 and 2001-04 respectively.
