Maldhari leaders have decided to wind up their agitation-cum-fast after receiving an assurance from the state government on Saturday afternoon on the cow slaughter issue.

The community's leaders who gathered near Income-Tax have decided to end their fast after one of their spiritual leaders called them and informed them about the assurance, given in the form of an invitation from the state government to discuss the matter.

The Maldharis have sat on fast near Income-Tax crossroads to register their protest against inefficiency of the government to stop cow slaughter in the state. As soon as they began their fast in the morning, a former minister, Ranchhod Rabari, approached their spiritual leader Kaniram Bapu at Vadvala and handed him a letter from the government. Ranchhod Rabari asked Bapu to postpone the agitation for some time as the CM was busy with his fast. He also told Bapu that Modi will definitely meet them on September 23 to sort out their issues.

According to Nagji Desai, the letter was issued on the letter head of the chief minister's office and bore the signature of a principal secretary. The letter assured the Maldharis that the government will discuss the issue on September 23.

"We have been invited by the CM. We are hoping to meet on the assured date to discuss our grievance," said Desai. The letter was handed over to Kaniram Bapu, who then summoned the Maldhari leaders to Income-Tax.

However, the Maldharis have not backed down from their earlier announcement of a mass rally to Gandhinagar if their demands are not met.

"We will march towards Gandhinagar with our cattle if the government fails to take any concrete step after the meeting," said Nagji Desai. They have decided to hold the rally on September 26.
